Velvaere | 837-8th St, Canmore, AB

Velvaere is a visionary mixed-use residential development in the Bow Valley region, poised to set a new standard for sustainability and community wellness. In adherence to Canmore’s Green Building Regulations, Velvaere strives for excellence in both environmental impact and human health, despite limitations on commercial solar energy in Alberta. Rezoned to accommodate affordable housing for seasonal workers, the retrofitted commercial ground floor will foster holistic well-being for residents and tourists alike. The rooftop indoor/outdoor event space provides a picturesque setting for residents, public gatherings, and private functions.

With the interiors rooted in biophilic design philosophies, the use of greenery seamlessly integrates the building environment into the surrounding landscape. Stone finishes mimic the rugged beauty of the neighboring mountains while warm wood elements add coziness and contrast. Incorporating elements of local craftsmanship and culture via upcycled materials will celebrate the region’s rich heritage and creativity while communicating the importance of sustainability and resourcefulness.

This model could support group transportation to specific work sites, stretching the aspects of sustainability. Since the Town of Canmore established their own Green Building Regulations in 2012, commercial or large multi-unit residential developments must:

Meet Alberta Building Code (ABC) - current version

Meet National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) - current version.

Exceed National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) - current version.

Due to limitations in Alberta's power grid, solar energy components are not feasible on this site so we will look to facilitate other energy reducing methods to ensure the project meets all necessary requirements.
